Hogwarts Legacy contains one PlayStation-exclusive quest you can find in Hogsmeade, the town near your favorite school for witchcraft and wizardry. This story involves you opening your own shop there, which comes with the benefit of getting a 10% boost to the value on any gear you’re selling there.
It’s quite a shame that only PS5 players get to experience this quest, as students on PC and Xbox Series X|S miss out on a pretty interesting chain of events. Things start simple, but quickly get a bit out of hand as you’re sucked into a haunted dungeon of considerable length, filled with scares that seem to come straight out of a Resident Evil game.
We’ll lead you through the Haunted Hogsmeade dungeon in our guide, so stick to the group and don’t go off wandering alone – you know that’s always the one to go first in those kinds of films.
Starting the Haunted Hogsmeade quest in Hogwarts Legacy
Just to be perfectly clear one more time: If you’re playing on PC or Xbox, this quest is not in your game. We don’t know how things will stand in the PS4 version, but for now, this is PS5 territory only.
Starting Haunted Hogsmeade requires you to visit Hogsmeade in Winter. You’ll see a quest on the eastern side of town, where you’ll find Penny the House Elf. She needs a new tenant for the shop she’s running. Visit Cassandra Mason in order to purchase the shop for yourself – and no worries, you won’t actually have to part with any of your hard-earned gold during this quest.
All Cassandra wants you to do is to get some of her late husband’s belongings from a chest in the store’s back room. Sounds easy, right? Yes, perfectly simple. Return to the shop and clean up using Reparo, then head to the back room and open the chest you find. Welcome to the dungeon.
Mannequins in the shop basement in Hogwarts Legacy
Move through the corridor you’ve arrived in and check the chest, which has a single hat in it. The mannequins in this creepy room move whenever you look away and it quickly gets dark, so have your Lumos at hand. Walk through the door that opens before you.
Keep moving and you’ll encounter a double door with two lantern stands next to it at some point. The left door has a glowy bit in the center, the left lantern stand has a lamp. Use Wingardium Leviosa – and, you know, pronounce it the right way – to get the floating lamp from the right side of the room into the empty stand. That unlocks the doors.
The next stop is a foyer containing a large locked door, which has been sealed shut by two bars. The paths on the left and right each let you unlock one of the bars. You decide where to go first, but we’ll continue with the right path in this guide.
Right path Atrium puzzles, lanterns, mannequin attacks
The path on the right eventually leads you to an Atrium, where you’ll be met by another double door. This time, both lantern stands are empty. Once again, you’re faced with two diverging paths, each netting you a lamp at the end. Let’s go down the left first this time, because why not?
Use Depulso to blast through the plans blocking the way. Inside, a lantern stand is to the right and a glowing lamp to the left, so Wingardium Leviosa this stuff and move through the door.
In the next area, go through the first door on your left. Cast Depulso again to clear the way to another lamp, which you can pull towards you with Wingardium Leviosa by using the D-Pad buttons. There is another empty stand here for this lamp. Before you leave, turn to your left and snatch the first glowing lantern you used in this section, taking it with you through the final door.
A bit of combat against the creepy mannequins awaits here. Once you’ve finished them off, use Lumos to find an open door. On the way, you can grab a lamp from a table, which comes in handy, because you’re now back in the Atrium and can place the lamp in one of the empty stands there. On to the right path!
Chess puzzle, more lanterns
As you walk deeper into this room, you’ll find another lantern to attach to an empty stand around here, which opens the way forward. Ready for a Harry Potter classic? Oh yeah, it’s time for a chessboard puzzle. The gist of it is: Don’t stand anywhere the pieces could get to you, following regular chess rules. If you’re not too familiar with those, here’s a quick introduction. Just kidding. Take a good look at the ground tiles and avoid jumping on the broken ones.
Once you’re through this section, you’ll find another pair of lantern stands, of which one has a lamp. It’s the one from before, actually. This place is a bit silly, isn’t it? Swap the lamp to the other stand and you’ll soon find an additional lamp to complete this area, opening the doors.
Fastidio, the ghost making a mockery of you throughout this entire sequence, will attack you at this point, but some dodging and counterattacking will see you to victory. Run back through the foyer once you’re done, and you’ll see that one of the bars has been removed.
Left path Library puzzles, more lanterns, mannequin maze – Hogwarts Legacy
Okay, we’re back in the foyer and are now taking the left path, which leads to the Library. You know the drill by now: double door, two lantern stands, two diverging paths. We go right first.
You’ll reach a ladder, which will make the door drop out and cast the area in darkness. Get some Lumos up in here to light the way, which will make doors open up. You’ll get to an endlessly big and square room next, which leads nowhere. Turn around, take the exit. After the next corridor, you’ll discover a jack-in-the-box next to a mannequin doll. Use Lumos after the lights go out, and you’ll find yourself in the mannequin maze.
You need to clear the entire maze of mannequins to continue, so polish your combat skills and chase them down – they like to run into walls of the place. You’ll find the lantern you seek once you’ve finished them all off and can carry it to the Library’s double door through the next path. Place it down and head left.
Upside-down room puzzle
Our next stop is a room that’s been turned upside-down. Or we’re walking on the ceiling or something. Anyway, there’s a lantern stand on the balcony opposite of yours, but no lamp. So head down, enter the room, walk up the stairs there, and look to your right.
An alcove near the top right of the room above the inaccessible balcony harbors the lantern, which you can bring down with Wingardium Leviosa. This will trigger the room to rotate into the correct position, allowing you to take the stairs and exit.
The next room houses another lamp on the left, which needs to be attached to the stand on the right. Next, walk through the unlocked door and grab the lantern you just used – a conveniently placed window allows you to do this. There is another lantern stand to place the lamp in here. That’s it. This puzzle opens the Library’s double doors.
Another confrontation with your old buddy Fastidio awaits you in the next room before you can advance onto the final stretch of this quest.
Main foyer door, Fastidio graveyard fight
Fastidio’s ghost summons a golem made out of junk from the store to fight you – it’s simply named Fastidio’s Monster.
This battle isn’t especially complicated, as Fastidio’s Monster essentially behaves like a troll: it charges at you, swings its weapon, and tosses missiles at you, which you can parry. There are no particular weaknesses you can take advantage of to speed things up – just do your worst.
One gimmick this encounter has in store is that it will turn the perspective upside-down at one point. Just lock onto your foe, keep dodging and parrying for a bit, and you’ll quickly get used to this view. Then, finish the monster off.
You can chat with Fastidio afterwards and finally escape this cursed chest. Check if everything is alright with the shop and then prepare to pay a visit to Cassandra – after all, she’s to pay a price for laying this trap.
Fighting Cassandra Mason, freeing Penny – Hogwarts Legacy
After you’ve escaped the chest and talked to Penny, report the incident to Ruth Singer, Hogsmeade’s policewoman. She’ll come with you as you confront Cassandra, though she isn’t of much use in battle, as Cassandra easily flings her against a wall.
Cassandra Mason is a tough opponent, but you can dodge and attack your way to victory without major problems if you stay focused. Once you’re done with her, you can free Penny by gifting her a hat, if you want to. She’ll work for you in any case, so this is really down to how you want to role-play your character. You also get to name your shop.
You’re now a proud shop owner and can sell your excess gear there with 10% more value than anywhere else, which will prove to be a great boon for the rest of your journey.
There are much more quests to complete and collectibles to grab in the game, so make sure you check out our Hogwarts Legacy complete guide and walkthrough for more tips.
