In Hogwarts Legacy, Merlin Trials are introduced early on, and you will need to complete a number of them in order to boost your inventory space. You get told about them early in the main quest line shortly after your first trip to Hogsmeade. The Merlin Trials consist of a number of short puzzles, but some require specific spells, making them unbending to beat.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Merlin Trials and how to beat them.
Hogwarts Legacy: Lighting braziers
- Required spells: Incendio and Confringo
One of the first trials you will come across is a challenge where you have to light three braziers in quick succession. When you light one it will start to sink into the ground which will extinguish the flame. This makes the challenge a lot tougher than it first appears.
Incendio has a fairly short range which will make the later puzzles of this type impossible. But it will work for the first one. Scout out the braziers and the range you will need before you start. You want to start by lighting the tallest one first, which will take the longest time before the fire goes out. The trick here is speed, so try to position yourself in an easy place to hit all of them.
Hogwarts Legacy: Smashing orbs
- Required spells: Revelio
It is possible to complete these trials using only your basic cast but Revelio will make your job a lot easier. There will be a number of stone orbs on top of pillars near where you start the trial, and you need to use your basic attack in order to smash them.
Revelio comes in as some of these orbs can be hidden, particularly those that are close to the ground. If you cast Revelio all the orbs in the surrounding area will turn blue, which should help you out if you are missing a few.
Hogwarts Legacy: Magnetic balls
- Required spells: Accio
These are the trials where you will see round platforms with spherical indents in the center. Nearby you will also see a number of balls that you need to place into these slots. This is an easy puzzle to solve. When you cast Accio on one ball, all the others will follow suit. As soon as you place the balls onto the platform, they will roll into place and complete the puzzle for you.
Hogwarts Legacy: Standing stones
- Required spells: None
This is one of the few puzzle types that don’t require any spells. Instead, it’s based on your platforming skills. For this one you need to run and jump across each stone platform without using your broom or touching the floor. The sequence of the stones is usually the same, but the environment around them will change. This means the best way that you approach each set is usually different.
Hogwarts Legacy: Glowing moths
- Required spells: Lumos
If you haven’t seen this type before it can be tricky to work out, but once you know how to do it, it’s one of the easier ones to solve. In the area around the trial, you will see three hollow stones with crystals inside. Nearby there should also be some glowing moths, which will be easier to see if you approach the trial at night. You need to use Lumos to attract the moths to your want, then lead them over to the crystals to light them.
Hogwarts Legacy: Destroying stones
- Required spells: Confringо and Revelio
These trials are similar to the ones where you have to smash orbs, only this time the stones are much bigger. In this instance, your basic cast is not strong enough to break them, and you will need to use Confringo instead. The stones you need to break will have a green marking on them. They are a lot easier to recognize though if you cast Revelio to make them glow blue.
Hogwarts Legacy: Repairing statues
- Required spells: Reparo and Revelio
As the name suggests you will need Reparo in order to fix these statues. You will see some broken statues in the area around the trial, and you need to cast Reparo on each one. If you cannot find all of the broken pieces, then Revelio will help you out.
Hogwarts Legacy: Cube symbols
- Required spells: Flipendo
In the area around these trials you will see some stone cubes with symbols on each side. You need to use Flipendo on these cubes in order to turn them to match the symbol directly below each one.
Hogwarts Legacy: Magic golf
- Required spells: Depulso, Wingardium Leviosa
In the trial area, you will see a spherical hole in the ground. If you scout out the area you will find a large boulder. In order to get the boulder into the hole, you will need to use Depulso. This will allow you to push the boulder around and get it into the hole. A slightly easier version of this is by using Wingardium Leviosa, but you pick this spell up later in the game.
