How to read a gas or electricity meter as households face steep rise in prices

People have been urged to take reading of their gas and electricity today ahead of tomorrow's price hike. April 1 will see costs rise by up to 54 per cent after the energy price cap - the maximum suppliers can charge - is being raised.

It means people in England, Scotland and Wales could be paying about £700 more for their energy. Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has already advised people to read their meters today to make sure they don't pay over the odds for supplies used before the increase.

Those with a smart meter do not have to do anything however everyone else is recommended to take a reading and submit it today. This will give your supplier proof of how much energy was used under the old price and help stop you paying more that necessary, reports Somerset Live.
