How to protect your home from damage as Storm Eunice brings hazardous conditions

Ireland is due to be battered by Storm Eunice over the coming days, and some counties will bear the brunt of the horrific conditions.

Those living in coastal areas will experience the highest wind speeds as the storm tracks over Ireland and forecasters have warned that there is a risk of flooding.

If you’re living close by any form of river, lake, or sea, you should be prepared to protect your home against damages caused by flooding.

Although severe floods have not been forecast, spot flooding features heavily throughout the latest forecasts, and so we have compiled some top tips provided by insuremyhouse.ie.

The experts for the Irish insurance broker have said homeowners should ensure all external walls and windows are adequately water-resistant.

If you think you may have an issue with either home feature, there are various products and sealants, and varnishes available in stores that can effectively seal the area.

If Met Eireann has any immediate flood warnings for your area, the best port of call would be to use sandbags and wrapping to protect your home.

Alternatively, if you live in a flood risk area, you should keep all of your personal and sentimental items as high above ground level as possible.

For any outdoor furniture or decorative pieces, you should secure anything that could be moved during a storm due to high winds.

Another key safety tip is to ensure you know where water, gas, and electricity mains are, just in case you need to turn them off at any stage.

The current weather warnings in place for Ireland are as follows:

  • Status Red storm warning from Howth head to Roche's point to Erris head and on the Irish sea south of Anglesey - Cyclonic variable winds, veering northwesterly will reach storm force 10 or violent storm-force 11 are expected at times overnight and on Friday morning
  • Status Red storm warning for Cork and Kerry - Storm Eunice will track quickly over Ireland tonight and Friday morning bringing severe and damaging winds. Southwest winds veering northwest will reach mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h with gusts in excess of 130 km/h. Some coastal flooding is expected, especially at high tide
  • Status Orange storm warning for Clare, Galway, Waterford, Wexford, Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wicklow, Laois, Offaly, and Dublin - Storm Eunice will track quickly over Ireland tonight and Friday morning bringing severe and damaging winds for a time. Southwest or cyclonic winds becoming northwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/h with gusts up to 130 km/h. Some coastal flooding is expected, especially at high tide
  • Status orange snow warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo, and Roscommon - Storm Eunice will bring heavy sleet and snow leading to blizzard-like conditions in parts with treacherous driving conditions
  • Status yellow wind, rain, and snow warning for Ireland - On Thursday night and on Friday the storm will bring very strong winds and falls of heavy rain, sleet and snow. Some disruption is likely along with a possibility of coastal and spot flooding. Warnings will be updated on Thursday morning
