How to look after drunk friends on a night out, according to security expert

We’ve all been there - having to look after a drunk friend on a night out. So, when the evening takes a turn for the worst what can you, as a friend, do?

Security experts at Get Licensed have put together five simple tips to help you look after your friend when they have drunk too much.

1. Be there for them

You see stories on social media of people leaving their friends when they are drunk. This is absolutely the wrong thing to do. You must be there for them, to make sure they don’t panic and that they are safe.

2. Make sure you eat before

It is important that you always remember to eat before you begin drinking. However, if it is too late for this, you can always give them plain food, which should help soak up the alcohol. A hearty meal before drinking is also a great way to prolong the evening and not peak too early. Certain foods such as eggs, bananas and even salmon (amongst other things) can help, and even stop you getting indigestion when drinking.

3. Remember the recovery position

If your friend wants to lie down because they are tired, you should keep the recovery position in mind. You don’t want them to lie on their back or stomach as they may choke on their own vomit.

4. Get them home safely

You may have had plans to go to other places, but it is important to know when enough is enough and it is time for them to retreat home safely. Why not offer them your sofa or spare bed? It will also make you feel better knowing that they have got home.

5. Get help

If your friend’s condition gets worse, don't be afraid to seek help. Door supervisors or staff members will help your friend by giving you water and calling a taxi. In extreme cases, you might need to consider calling an ambulance.

As Shahzad Ali, CEO of Get Licensed, explained: “Seeing people who have drunk one too many alcoholic drinks is nothing new for door supervisors, they are extensively trained in the different methods used to deal with people who are under the influence of alcohol. If you are struggling with your drunk friend, you should approach a door supervisor. Ultimately, security personnel have your best interests in mind and their main aim is to keep people safe.”
