Filing an insurance claim can feel overwhelming, especially during an already stressful time. When disasters strike, the process of getting your insurer to pay can be as challenging as rebuilding what’s lost. For Andrea Johnson, this became a reality in May when a tornado with 200-mile-per-hour winds tore through her hometown of Moore, Oklahoma.
Andrea had gone years without filing a homeowners insurance claim, but that fateful afternoon, her life changed in an instant. The tornado left behind a path of devastation so extensive that Andrea struggled to even locate her street upon returning home. “The neighborhood behind ours was totally destroyed and reduced to debris,” she recalls. Her own home wasn’t spared: one side was completely gone, and pieces of her neighbor’s house had crashed into hers.
