How to get a capybara in Enshrouded Wake of the Water update

First we got cats, dogs, and deer. Then we got yak and goats. Now? Capybaras.

That’s right, Enshrouded fans; you can have your very own capybaras in the survival-crafting game with the new Wake of the Water update. These giant rodents produce vital resources that will allow you to craft new items, but you can’t just walk up to one and put a leash on it. No, you actually need to complete a quest before you can tame one and bring it home with you.

Where to find a capybara in Enshrouded

Capybaras can be found in Enshrouded’s new Veilwater Basin biome, which lies between the Albaneve Summits and the Blackmire. You can reach it by heading west from the Albaneve Summits Ancient Spire fast travel location and scaling the mountain to glide down to the basin below.

Once you’ve arrived in the Veilwater Basin, it’s time to start our hunt for our very own capybara. While they can be found scattered around the map, you’ll want to head to the Capybara Oasis, which can be found on the west side of the region, marked on the map above. The easiest way to get there is by gliding southwest from the Ancient Spire in the middle of Lake Heartblood. When you arrive at the Capybara Oasis, you'll find a horde of the giant rodents here, relaxing in the waters and hanging with their fellow capybara friends.

In the middle of the landmark, you'll see a large waterfall. Head here and look for a dead capybara at the base of the waterfall. Loot its body, and you’ll find two items: Capybara Bristles and Drak Teeth. This will trigger the beginning of the quest “Capybara Search and Rescue,” which informs you that the Drak—a hostile reptilian race of creatures—have been massacring the local capybara population. You’re then tasked with finding a nearby Drak camp and avenging these rodents.

The quest is labelled as "Hard" difficulty, but the reward is a baby capybara and 75 experience points. So, it's worth it, right?

Completing "Capybara Search and Rescue" quest in Enshrouded

Luckily, you won't have to travel far for vengeance. The Drak camp is just southwest of the Capybara Oasis, and if you set the quest as your active one, it will highlight the location on your map. Drak can be tough, and most of these reptilian foes will be around level 39, so if you're a lower level, you might want to find some place high to camp and then rain arrows down from above like I did.

There are several Drak in the outpost, but killing the largest one on the ground floor of the camp completes the quest. When you loot his body, you'll find a baby capybara, which you can then add to your base.

Before you leave this Drak camp, be sure to loot around the area. There will be plenty of key resources in the wooden containers that you can find scattered around the outpost, and destroying them with your axe will sometimes yield items like Fish Bones or Fish Teeth, which you'll need to craft certain armor sets like the Skull Stalker at the Hunter's workshop. You'll also find a Gold Ore vein in one of the huts in the camp, so it's worth doing a bit of mining before you head out.

How to tame a Capybara in Enshrouded

Once you've added your capybara to your base, you'll probably want to get it some friends. Speak to Emily Fray the Farmer, and she'll have a quest ready for you simply called "Capybara." Starting this quest will unlock the Capybara Bait recipe, which requires the following ingredients:

  • 1 Sugar Cane
  • 2 Paper Reed
  • 2 Algae

Algae can be found in the Veilwater Basin region, while Sugar Cane is harvested from the Nomad Highlands. Paper Reeds are found all around Embervale next to bodies of water, like small ponds and lakes. When you have all the ingredients, craft some bait and head back to the Capybara Oasis.

Taming a capybara is the same process as taming a cat or dog—or any other animal in Enshrouded, really. You'll want to throw down a bait ball in front of one of the animals and wait for it to approach the food and begin eating. When it begins munching on the bait, a flashing yellow heart will appear over its head. At that point, you can slowly crouch-walk to it and pet it. The yellow heart will then turn red. When it does, walk away from the animal so it doesn't become startled and remove your progress. You'll need to repeat this process one more time before you can pick it up and add it to your inventory.

Occasionally, you might see other icons appearing next to the creature's yellow health bar, indicating whether it's startled. A yellow question mark means the animal can become startled; if you see one, turn from the capybara and start walking away. If you don't, that question mark will become a red exclamation point, and it will remove any hearts you may have made in the taming process.

When you've successfully tamed the capybara and added it to your inventory, you'll unlock the recipe for the Capybara Feeder, which can be crafted at the farmer with seven Wood Logs and two Nails. You can also craft some Capybara Food with two Paper Reeds and three Algae to make sure your capybara stay fat and happy.
