Food banks are facing higher demand than ever before as the cost of living crisis worsens.
The Trussell Trust gave out 2.1 million emergency food parcels between April 2021 and March 2022, an increase of 14% compared with pre-pandemic levels.
One in six people in the UK used a food bank in March of this year, according to statistics from the Food Standards Agency - compared with one in 10 in 2021.

With the cost of fuel, energy and food rising, while national insurance, council tax, VAT and rent have also jumped up, millions have been plunged below the poverty line. Despite the UK being the sixth richest country in the world, millions are struggling to feed themselves and their families.
How to find a food bank near you
The Trussell Trust has a map to help people find their nearest food banks. There are a number of food banks in South Liverpool, and others in North Liverpool, as well as more in Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens.
Opening times vary, but you can find these out via the Trussell Trust. Food parcels given by the Trust include "at least three days' worth of nutritionally balanced meals for individuals and families".
A typical parcel includes cereal, soup, pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes, lentils, tinned meat and vegetables, tea or coffee and tinned fruit. Food banks also provide essential non-food items like toiletries and hygiene products where they can.
Visiting a food bank can be daunting, but volunteers are there to help. They will make sure you feel comfortable and take the time to listen.
Who is eligible to use a food bank?
In order to get help from the food bank you will need to be referred with a voucher.
Each food bank works with different frontline professionals, like doctors, health visitors, social workers, and Citizens Advice. These professionals will be able to refer you to a food bank and give you a food bank voucher if they think you need emergency food.
The food bank and referral agency will use this voucher to gather some basic information about you. This will help them to understand why you need support and offer practical guidance, and the right emergency food.
Once you have a voucher you can take it to a food bank to exchange it for a parcel.
How can I donate to a food bank?
There are many ways people can give to food banks. These include making a one-off donation, or a regular donation by direct debit or standing order.
You can also donate food supplies and/or goods at a number of collection points. Food banks are often in need of certain item, so it can be more beneficial if you check what is needed before you go.
