When it's a very hot day, you might think opening your windows would be a nice thing to do. But no - even that comes with its own set of challenges.
During the summer months, an open window might let in a bit of a breeze but it will also let in flies. Why they come in, we don't know, as they spend most of the time they're in desperately trying to fly into the windows and get back out. But some say they are attracted to rubbish, ripe fruit and anything with moisture.
House flies are partial to any decaying organic filth such as rotting meat. And fruit flies are looking for sugary substances so will buzz towards any overripe fruit, patches of fizzy drink and even alcohol.

Then there's Drain flies which like moist climates and organic materials so are particularly interested in your kitchen sink, where they also like to lay their eggs if given half a chance. Flies are not only annoying, and pretty gross, but they can spread bacteria such as Salmonella, typhoid and E-Coli so you do have to deal with them and not let them get out of hand.
However, the Express reports that there are things you can do. Walter Murphy, is a pest control expert at PriceYourJob.co.uk and says some smells are revolting to flies and we should fill our houses with them if we want to put the creatures off.
For some reason flies can't bare the smell of essential oils like lemongrass or peppermint and even better, many essential oils are toxic to flies, insects, and can even help get rid of ants. Walter says: “Anything that contains essential oils such as lemongrass or peppermint will keep flies at bay. These natural fragrances give off a strong smell that instantly deters flies from entering your home.
“There are plenty of household sprays and perfumes that contain essential oils. You can use them in every room in the house.”
Cinnamon is another a scent that a fly cannot stand. Walter explains: “Flies hate the smell of cinnamon. You may consider purchasing a cinnamon- infused air freshener to reduce the number of flies in your home. Burning cinnamon candles is also another great way to get rid of flies, as the smell will spread easily around the property.”
Finally, if you flies are still there despite you having a lovely essential oils massage and a Christmassy hot chocolate with cinnamon. they also hate it when you're drunk.
Walter say: “Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka, so you may want to use a spray that contains vodka to ensure that no flies enter your home. You can also place vodka bags around your home, especially in areas like the kitchen, in order to prevent any food contamination.”
