Met Eireann’s latest forecast shows icy weather bringing about treacherous driving conditions over the next 24 hours in Ireland.
Some counties - mainly in the north - are expecting snow to fall overnight, and so drivers are being warned to take it easy on their commutes.
One of the most time-consuming things can be de-icing the car before you set off to work first thing in the morning, and with temperatures dropping to -1, thousands of motorists can expect this fate over the coming days.
The last thing anyone needs is a smashed window to start the day, so leave the kettle of boiling water aside and follow these expert tips from Autoglass.
According to the Irish company, “Applying boiling water to your windscreen not only risks damaging the glass but believe it or not, in extremely cold conditions, hot water can freeze faster than cooler water.
“So, if you apply hot water to a frozen windshield, you may find it refreezing again soon.”
Instead, you should mix 1/3 of a cup of water with 2/3 of a cup of rubbing alcohol to produce a DIY defrosting spray for yourself.
“Due to rubbing alcohol’s freezing point of -128°C, this spray should clear icy windscreens with ease.
You can also use these homemade de-icing sprays as a preventative measure and avoid the morning scuffle.
If you think of it the night before temperatures are due to drop, mix 2/3 parts white vinegar to ⅓ part water.
“Spray this mixture on your windshield before the temperature drops in the evening.
“This solution should prevent your windshield and rear window icing up so you can avoid having to defrost your car windshield in the morning.”
