How to bypass Elon Musk’s Twitter read limits

With Twitter now actively limiting the number of daily tweets people can view, you may be wondering if there’s a workaround for the restrictions.

Well, it appears that some plucky internet sleuths have spotted a few ways to gain unrestricted access to the platform.

According to Reddit users, you can use tools like a special web browser extension or a virtual private network (VPN) to bypass Twitter’s so-called rate limits.

Introduced by Elon Musk late last week, the changes effectively cap the number of tweets users can view in a day.

Initially, verified accounts, who pay for a Twitter Blue subscription, were limited to reading 6,000 posts per day; while others were limited to either 600 or 300 based on the age of their account.

Musk later announced an increase to the limits to 10,000 for subscribers, and 1,000 and 500 for everyone else. The entrepreneur said the curbs were designed to “address extreme levels of data scraping” by AI companies and “system manipulation”.

The limits were also imposed on TweetDeck, a dashboard that lets power users curate their Twitter experience.

However, there are several ways you can apparently sidestep the new paywall. Here’s what you need to know.

How to bypass Twitter’s rate limit

Try a VPN

A VPN is software that essentially changes your unique internet address so that your online activity stays hidden.

But, it can also help you to sidestep Twitter’s strict new rules as long as you connect before you reach your daily limit. Just be sure to repeat this step every day otherwise you could still be blocked from viewing tweets.

Although the best VPNs cost money, they’re still cheaper than a Twitter Blue subscription, and many come with additional privacy perks that can keep you secure online. There are also some free options that people have recommended online, including UltraSurf VPN for iOS and Android.

Try the Old Twitter Layout extension

If repeatedly logging in and out of a VPN sounds too finicky, you could try installing a web browser extension designed for Twitter that doesn’t require as much work.

Redditors swear by this tool called “Old Twitter Layout” which basically changes the look of the platform to an older design circa 2015. Miraculously, it seems that the extension isn’t beholden to Twitter’s new restrictions, so it could be a must-have for users that keep hitting their limit.

But, it’s worth noting that there do appear to be some flaws with the tool. Chiefly, it appears that it doesn’t load some Twitter pages directly, meaning you’d have to stick to your home feed when browsing. Fortunately, the developer claims to be aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

Best of all, it supports two of the most popular web browsers: Chrome and Firefox.

Use Twitter on the web and mobile

You can get a bit more mileage out of Twitter by switching to the web version from the mobile app when you reach your limit, according to the social media experts at FollowChain.

Thankfully, you can do this on your phone as well as your laptop by navigating to twitter.com from your chosen web browser.

In addition, you can view more tweets by going to Twitter in incognito mode on Chrome, and logging in to your account.

Pay for Twitter Blue or wait it out

If all else fails, you could subscribe to Twitter Blue for £9.60 per month to view up to 10,000 tweets per day. This should be more than enough content for even the most hardcore Twitter addicts.

Or, you could wait for the rate limit to reset after 24 hours. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if Twitter caves to pressure and reverses the restriction altogether. After all, it recently reversed its requirement to only allow logged-in users to view tweets.
