How 'The Bad Guys' shows off an animated Los Angeles in that spectacular car chase

LOS ANGELES — DreamWorks Animation's "The Bad Guys" opens with what seems like a routine meet-up between best friends.

But Wolf and Snake are not just ordinary pals — they're part of a close-knit gang of notorious criminals about to rob a bank. The job quickly leads to a spectacular car chase throughout a version of Los Angeles unique to animation.

"That chase was there from the beginning," director Pierre Perifel said in a recent video call. "I wanted the movie to start like a rocket. [It's] calm, and then boom! Right away, you're in it and you understand the style, you understand the tone, you understand the genre. It's an action film with cool characters trying to escape the police."
