How Swansea City could line up with Allen, Darling and Sorinola as piece of jigsaw still missing

Perhaps it was the flurry of activity from their friends down the road, but it wasn't that long ago Swansea City fans were grumbling with frustration at their side's dealings in the transfer market.

However, fast-forward a few weeks, and there seems to be a huge air of positivity around Fairwood at the moment. Russell Martin is in the middle of his first full pre-season with this squad, and there's every hope his side can hit the ground running a little bit more, having perhaps struggled to find their feet at times as he looked to implement his brand of high octane possession-based football.

The sale of Flynn Downes to West Ham United has unquestionably come as a blow in a footballing sense, but it has certainly helped to plug a financial gap, meaning there's now just as much positivity off the pitch as there is on the training field.

Make no mistake, Martin will have been disappointed to lose Downes given the midfielder's importance to Swansea's engine room last season, but he has been able to bring in a more than capable replacement in Joe Allen, who has completed a sensational homecoming after 10 years away.

Nathan Wood and Harry Darling have come in to strengthen his defensive hand, and the arrival of Matty Sorinola has added to his options out wide.

Playing out from the back has almost become something of a cliche, such is its ubiquitousness in the modern game, and it's similarly at the heart of the foundations of Martin's vision. Indeed, there were occasions last season where fans grew a little impatient at the time the Swans spent knocking it around their own back four, and the recruitment of a ball-playing centre-back like Darling shows Martin has perhaps held his hands up and admitted it's an area that needed to improve on.

Andy Fisher will surely keep the number-one jersey next term, while one suspects Ben Cabango and Wood will fight it out for a place in the back three alongside Darling and Kyle Naughton, whose experience and leadership on the pitch has elevated him to one of Martin's most trusted players.

One would think Allen, once he recovers from his hamstring injury, will replace Downes and sit in alongside Matt Grimes in the heart of midfield, while Sorinola will likely take his place as a left wingback

The right flank, meanwhile, is something of a conundrum. Sorinola has been known to play there, but it's not really his preferred position, although following the departure of Cyrus Christie there aren't an awful lot of other options.

Joel Latibeaudiere has played there on occasion, but again he's probably more suited to playing as part of a back three. In any case, there are still questions over his future in SA1, with Burnley showing a keen interest this summer.

Martin is clearly looking to address the situation. Chiedozie Ogbene at Rotherham United is a player he's admired for some time, although any move would likely require a fee. Likewise Marcus Harness at Portsmouth.

After finding a breakthrough in their Allen chase, it remains to be seen whether they can find another here, but it certainly has to be a priority before the close of the window. In contrast, the front three is likely to be far more simple, with Jamie Paterson and deep-lying striker Joel Piroe supplementing Michael Obafemi up front.

There might well still be some unease over Piroe's future of course given there's already been a fair amount of speculation, but the sale of Downes means that Swansea are now in a stronger position to keep hold of the Dutchman.

That will be a huge boost for everyone ahead of the new campaign.

Swansea City's best XI as things stand: Fisher; Cabango, Naughton, Darling; Latibeaudiere, Allen, Grimes, Sorinola; Piroe, Paterson; Obafemi.
