How Rashan Gary’s new 4-year, $107M deal with Packers impacts Haason Reddick

The Eagles retooled this offseason, signing All-Pro quarterback Jalen Hurts to a massive contract extension and adjusting after losing some big-name defenders in free agency.

If Philadelphia thought they had a problem after Nick Bosa agreed to a five-year, $170 million extension with San Francisco, wait until Howie Roseman sees Rashan Gary’s new deal.

According to Ian Rapoport, The Packers and star pass-rusher Rashan Gary have agreed to terms on a 4-year, $96M extension in new money — $107,532,706 overall — with a signing bonus of $34,636,928.

The deal comes almost three months after Haason Reddick was asked about his salary and where it ranks among the NFL’s top pass rushers.

The $24 million per season puts Gary on par with Maxx Crosby as the sixth highest-paid edge rusher in the NFL.

GM Howie Roseman focused on adding younger talent in free agency this offseason, with the potential for impactful production on a cheap deal.

With Gary’s new deal in place, here’s how it impacts the Eagles and Haason Reddick.

Gary was in line for an extension before this until he tore the ACL in his left knee last November. The Packers took a wait and see approach.

Reddick had 35 solo tackles, 14 assists, 16.0 sacks and 3 fumble recoveries in 17 games in 2022, while being selected to play in his first Pro Bowl, and earning All-Pro honors.

While just 39% of the defensive snaps this season as a precaution, Rashan Gary has 4.5 sacks and 15 pressures through seven games. He played a season-high 46 defensive snaps in Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Reddick has 6 sacks after a slow start, 18 hurries, 2 QB hits and 26 total pressures.

After Nick Bosa’s new deal, he became the highest paid edge rusher and defender at $34M average per season.

T.J. Watt ranked second among edge rushers at $28.15 million per year followed by Joey Bosa ($27 million) and Myles Garrett ($25 million). The new money in Gary’s deal puts him just below Garrett at $24 million, and ahead of Maxx Crosby and Khalil Mack.

Reddick is entering the second of a three-year, $45 million deal and he’s currently the 16th highest paid edge rusher in the NFL.

Final observation

The 29 year old Reddick has two years remaining on his deal, but 2023 is the last year of guaranteed money, and he’ll carry a $20 million cap hit.

If Philadelphia doesn’t sign Reddick to an extension or add new money to his deal, he’ll be a 30 or 31-year old free agent looking for a new deal.

With Howie Roseman drafting Nolan Smith, things could get interesting this upcoming offseason regardless of the numbers Reddick post.
