- The average cost of charging an electric vehicle (EV) at a public charger is now cheaper per mile than fuelling a petrol or diesel car in the UK, a first in over a year.
- Industry body Charge UK's analysis indicates standard public EV charging costs around 15p per mile, while petrol cars cost 17p and diesel cars 17.5p per mile, largely due to recent fuel price increases.
- Home charging offers even greater savings, costing as little as 2p per mile, with only exclusive use of ultra-rapid public chargers remaining more expensive than liquid fuels.
- Separate analysis by Autotrader found that the average purchase price of a new EV has fallen below that of new petrol models for the first time, at £42,620 compared to £43,405.
- Despite these savings, the UK still has the highest public charging costs in Europe, partly due to a 20 per cent VAT rate on public chargers compared to 5 per cent for domestic electricity.
