How Prince Louis became a talking point at the Wales family's Christmas outing

The Princess of Wales's annual Together at Christmas carol service has become a festive fixture in the royal calendar, but this year's event attracted particular attention for a reason that went beyond the music, readings and Christmas decorations.

The 2025 service carried added significance for the Princess of Wales, who had completed chemotherapy in September 2024 and was continuing to balance public duties with her recovery. According to Reuters , the Waleses arrived together for the event, which was attended by around 1,600 guests and celebrated people who have made a difference in their communities.

Although the central theme of the carol service was community, kindness and compassion, royal watchers were equally focused on the dynamics within the family on show, especially the presence of Prince Louis.

A rare outing for all three Wales children

One reason the service drew so much interest is that appearances by all three Wales children remain relatively rare, a point widely noted across British media and social platforms.

According to Reuters, Prince William and Catherine attended the service, which they called Together at Christmas, with their children, including Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, as they prepared for their annual tradition of supporting volunteers, community leaders and fundraisers from across the country.

Westminster Abbey also confirmed the attendance of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, along with their parents, alongside other members of the Royal Family. For royal watchers, this was yet another opportunity to see the young royals together at a large public event, rather than separately at events like Trooping the Colour.

Prince Louis once again takes centre stage

Prince Louis has in recent years become one of the more closely watched young royals, largely because of his expressions and gestures at public events. Although nothing dramatic happened at Westminster Abbey, his attendance still became a talking point.

Photos of Louis arriving with his family emphasised the family atmosphere of the evening. This reflects a common pattern in royal coverage, where appearances by young royals often attract public interest.

His appearance also added to the family element of the event without overshadowing its charitable focus.

The service has become especially significant to the Princess of Wales

The 2025 service carried added significance for the Princess of Wales, coming more than a year after she announced she had completed chemotherapy treatment and as she continued a gradual return to public duties.

She said the service was a reminder of the importance of kindness, compassion, and supporting one another through difficult times, reflecting the service’s message. The service’s message emphasised love in many forms, from family and friends to communities and society.

Westminster Abbey said the evening celebrated “compassion and togetherness” while welcoming those who contribute to local communities. This makes the presence of Prince William, Catherine and the Wales children all the more relevant and fitting to the service they were attending.

The family moments people remember

Royal events may well be structured with a planned programme of activities and scheduled duties, but often it is the more candid and simplistic of family moments that become the highlight of such occasions.

Alongside the service's charitable message, considerable attention was given to the Wales family's arrival at Westminster Abbey, with several news outlets highlighting the appearance of all three children. ITV News reported how Prince William and Catherine attended the 1,600-person congregation with their children.

As can be seen, it was not necessarily anything particularly grand from Prince Louis that made him a talking point; rather, it was his presence that captured attention due to its implication for the family spirit behind the event.

Despite the long royal tradition, the young prince’s appearance reinforced the sense of a family celebrating Christmas together. As history shows us all too clearly with the monarchy, these are often the moments that attract the most public attention.
