How plans to open a McDonald's drive-thru in Glossop have split the 'Gateway to the Peak' in two

If you live in Glossop and fancy a McDonald's you have to get in your car and drive the four miles or so to the nearest branch in Hyde.

But that could could soon be about to change.

The fast food firm has applied for planning permission to open its first restaurant in Glossop, on the site of the derelict Wrens Nest pub, off Glossop Brook Road.

But the contentious plans have split the old market town, known as the 'Gateway to the Peak', in two.

Arguments are raging on local Facebook pages and at the time of writing 916 people have written to the council commenting on the application.

That's around one in every 35 people in Glossop.

Many are in support and have have submitted what appears to be a template letter which says: "I support the application because it would bring a derelict site back in to use, create local jobs and represent a significant investment in the local area."

But plenty of others are objecting, raising concerns about litter, traffic and the impact on existing local businesses.

Glossop resident Jane Fantom set up a group on social media to oppose the plans.

She told DerbyshireLive : "Most established residents value the diversity of shops, pubs, and cafes that Glossop has to offer as well as the green space and moorland beyond the town.

"If McDonald’s took over the town it would change the unique character of Glossop as a Victorian mill town on the edge of the Peak District as well as smaller businesses being lost."

In its application McDonald's say the restaurant 'represents a multi-million pound investment' and will create more 65 full and part-time jobs.

The firm adds: "The proposals provide the opportunity for McDonald’s to meet a long-standing requirement for a restaurant to serve this catchment area, to meet customer demand and introduce additional choice in the market.

"The design and layout of the proposal is appropriate in the area. Natural and neutral colours and materials will be used on the building and throughout the scheme to ensure the site integrates easily with the surroundings.

"The site represents an appropriate location for a drive-thru restaurant, which will be well placed to offer refreshments to passing customers and those in the surrounding area."

Members of the public can comment on plans until February 22.

A decision will be made at a later date.
