More than 800,000 chip in to clean up tonnes of rubbish

A record 800,000 volunteers wearing gloves and carrying rubbish bags were happy to get down and dirty at about 8000 sites nationwide to clean up beaches, parks, streets and waterways.

Sunday marked 35 years of Clean Up Australia Day, an initiative spearheaded by builder and yachtsman Ian Kiernan who felt spurred to act after witnessing the extent of ocean pollution first-hand.
