How Nottingham Forest's record defeat compares with Liverpool’s 7-0 thrashing of Man Utd

Liverpool’s record thrashing of Manchester United may bring up bad memories for some Nottingham Forest fans.

With Jurgen Klopp’s resurgent Reds putting Eric Ten Hag’s woeful side to the sword this past weekend, they handed Manchester United their heaviest ever league defeat.

But despite being able to admire the spectacle from afar, there will be some Forest supporters who saw such a one-sided score and recalled their own horror show from days gone by.

As some will remember, Forest’s record defeat came all the way back in 1959, as Burnley dished out an 8-0 drubbing in the old First Division, while they conceded one more than that during a 9-2 loss to Tottenham in 1962.

In more recent times this season’s 6-0 defeat at Manchester City is the club’s biggest loss this century, equalling their 2005 Championship loss to Ipswich Town. But Forest are far from the only Premier League side with some past scores they’d rather forget.

Both Southampton and Bournemouth have the unwanted honour of losing 9-0, with the Cherries also on the receiving end of an Anfield hammering this season, shipping nine in August. The Saints are the only club to have received such a pummelling twice, and in consecutive seasons no less, losing by the record margin to Leicester in 2019 and Manchester United in February 2021.

However, the Leicester game stands alone as the heaviest home defeat in Premier League history. Another 9-0 score was actually dished out by United back in 1995, as they crushed Ipswich Town, who went on to finish rock bottom of the then 22-team top flight.

But even those monstrous scores were bettered by Liverpool back in 1986, as poor Fulham were on the end of a 10-0 hiding in the League Cup second round. While the ‘modern’ era of football tends to throw up more competitive fixtures for the most part, the all-time record for the professional game in England took place 136 years ago.

Preston North End put an incredible 26 goals past a hapless Hyde FC in an FA Cup first round tie at Deepdale, setting the record for scoring the most goals in a single game, the highest home winning margin and the highest aggregate score – all of which still stand today.
