Winemakers in the United States produced slightly more than 752 million gallons of wine in 2022, the lowest total in a decade, according to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Domestic wine production peaked at 889,585,529 million gallons in 2017 before declining by approximately 10 percent between 2019 and 2020. It has yet to rebound, primarily due to damage from wildfires in Western states that are home to the majority of American wine producers.
What state produces the most wine?
California has been the traditional home of US wine production, and its vineyards still produce most American wine — 599,557,535 million gallons in 2022, or 79.7% of the national total. Most barrels still come from California, but its share of the total output has slightly declined over the past decade: the state produced 86.3% of all domestic wine in 2012, the earliest year of available data.

What states are increasing wine production?
Despite declining national production overall, many states have increased their share of production over the past decade. Vineyards in Washington (5.6%), New York (4.3%), and Oregon (2.4%) are the only other states producing more than one percent of the 2022 national total. Raw output has increased in each of those states since 2012.
In 2022, vineyards in an additional 22 states produced more than 500,000 gallons of wine each, six more states than in 2012. Three states — Michigan, Ohio, and Massachusetts — increased their wine production by more than two million gallons.
