- The US State Department is set to significantly reduce the fee for renouncing US citizenship.
- From 13 April, the cost will decrease by over 80 per cent, from $2,350 to $450, returning to the 2010 fee level.
- This reduction follows a years-long legal battle and criticism from groups such as the Association of Accidental Americans.
- The previous fee hike in 2015 was implemented to cover administrative expenses due to a surge in renunciations, partly driven by new US tax reporting requirements for expatriates.
- The Association of Accidental Americans, representing those whose US citizenship is solely due to birth, welcomed the decision as a victory for making this fundamental right accessible.
