How much are you charged if you forget to tap in or tap out on Metrolink?

It can be an easy mistake to make - whether you're in a rush, or if it just completely slips your mind, sometimes you might forget to tap out while using the Metrolink.

With 99 tram stops across Greater Manchester, it's a convenient way to get around - whether you're commuting to work or heading out to make the most of Manchester's attractions. There are a number of ways to buy a ticket for the tram, including purchasing a physical ticket at the tram stop or a mobile ticket through the 'Get Me There' app.

But a popular option used by many is to tap on and off at the smart readers, using a contactless card or your phone. But just how much could it cost you if you use the Metrolink incorrectly?

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) warns that passengers could be charged an incomplete journey fare if they forget to touch out. Their website states: "If you fail to touch-out at your destination stop, with the same card or device, we won’t know what journey(s) you made."

You have up to two hours to complete a single journey, but if you don't touch off then your account will be charged the incomplete journey fare, which is currently £4.60. Charges for incomplete journeys do not count towards the daily or weekly caps and the next time you touch your card or device to a smart reader, you will start a new journey and will need to touch-out to complete it.

However you don’t need to touch-out and touch-in again if you’re just changing trams as part of a single journey between two Metrolink stops.

If you forget to touch-in before your journey, you could be charged the contactless standard fare of £45. Or, if your card or device is not authorised for travel, you will be liable for up to £100 for the Metrolink standard fare.
