How Mikel Arteta watched Liverpool vs Manchester City as Arsenal receive huge title race boost

Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table on Sunday with a huge victory over Leeds United, though it was far from an easy match. After the game was delayed for around 40 minutes due to a power cut that wiped out all technology available to the referees, the Gunners were under pressure from the hosts.

Bukayo Saka looked to relieve that when he rifled his effort into the roof of the net from a tight angle to give the visitors the lead. While Mikel Arteta's side were winning, they still found the game far from comfortable as Patrick Bamford 'scored' before his effort was disallowed for a push on Gabriel.

The striker had a chance to score again, this time from the spot as William Saliba handled the ball in the box, but he put the penalty wide. He then appeared to win a spot-kick in the last minute after a kick out from Gabriel, though VAR overturned the decision as Bamford was judged to foul the defender beforehand.

It marked a narrow victory for the Gunners, but a huge three points in which they had to deviate from their usual style of play at times to win. At the very least they were guaranteed to be one point clear at the top after winning, however a favour from Liverpool would see them move further clear.

That is exactly what happened as Mohamed Salah scored on the counter-attack to hand Manchester City a first defeat of the season as Arsenal extended the lead at the top to four points. Amid talks of a title challenge against both sides, Arteta was asked if he would watch the match after his side won, claiming he would do so in style.

"I will be watching with a nice dinner in front of me," The Arsenal boss said. "Because that was really hectic and I need to calm down."

He may have enjoyed what he saw as his side continue to rise to the challenge of pushing for the title this season. It remains to be seen if they can do just that, but as they continue game by game, belief is growing.
