How many points Arsenal need to win Premier League title if Man City handed points deduction

Arsenal lost their big top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City on Wednesday night. That meant, for the first time since November, there was a new name on top of the Premier League table, with the Citizens taking over from the Gunners by virtue of a better goal difference.

Arsenal still have a game in hand and can return to the Premier League summit, but without a win in their last three games, things have just hit the buffers for Mikel Arteta's side.

Tricky away games at Aston Villa and Leicester City are to come in the next week and a half, with the Gunners looking to get back to winning ways and put the pressure back on City.

City have the pressure of possible Premier League sanctions hanging over their heads too, with the league investigating more than 100 breaches of their rules around finances.

City have been charged with breaking financial fair play rules around 100 times over a nine-year period, which starts in 2009 and goes on until 2018. And if found guilty, they could face a points deduction and even expulsion from the Premier League.

Any points deduction would only come into force during the season in which they are currently playing when a verdict is brought. That could be this season, or it could be next.

If City were to be found guilty this season and handed a points deduction, Arsenal would be back in the driving seat for the Premier League crown. How many points City would be deducted is up for debate though.

English clubs in breach of financial rules in lower divisions have been handed either six or nine-point penalties in the past. However, in Italy, Juventus were handed a 15-point deduction for breaching financial rules this season.

So what does that mean for Arsenal?

Six-point deduction

Arsenal would need to win 13 and draw one of their remaining 16 games to claim the Premier League title if City were found guilty and handed a six-point deduction.

If one of those wins was to be in the reverse fixture with City, Arsenal would only need to win 11 other games, with one draw.

Nine-point deduction

Arsenal would need to win 12 and draw one of their remaining 16 games to claim the Premier League title if City were found guilty and handed a six-point deduction.

If one of those wins was to be in the reverse fixture with City, Arsenal would only need to win 10 other games, with one draw.

15-point deduction

Arsenal would need to win 10 and draw one of their remaining 16 games to claim the Premier League title if City were found guilty and handed a six-point deduction.

If one of those wins was to be in the reverse fixture with City, Arsenal would only need to win 8 other games, with one draw.
