How Man City should line up vs Bayern Munich in final pre-season fixture

Manchester City head into their final pre-season fixture looking to build on their victory over Club America in midweek.

A Kevin De Bruyne double helped the Blues to a 2-1 victory in Houston. Henry Martin had equalised for the Mexican side in the 43rd minute before the City midfielder restored the advantage.

Next up for Pep Guardiola's men are Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. After that City will face Liverpool in the Community Shield and so Guardiola will no doubt be hoping to give plenty of first-team players a run-out against Bayern.

Here is how our reporters think City should line up against Bayern:

Joe Bray

Given Erling Haaland's managed build-up to fitness, I'd save him for a second half that might not be as intense as the first against Bayern. Julian Alvarez was impressive in Houston and is the fittest player in the squad so shouldn't have any issues with leading the line.

Elsewhere, the team largely picks itself. Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo are the only full-back options, with Ruben Dias maybe the only change to the starting line-up from Wednesday night. Ederson should also replace Stefan Ortega, despite the German looking good vs Club America.

Kalvin Phillips would be the only other option to start, however, I'd operate the same plan as the first friendly, bringing him on at half-time. This time, though, he deserves a full 45 in midfield to see how he does in his natural position and against better opposition.

Joe's XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo; Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo; Grealish, Mahrez, Alvarez.

Haaland is the name everyone is hoping to see on the team sheet, but I suspect he'll be introduced as a half-time substitute. While he and Guardiola both said he will likely make his debut against Bayern, the latter was careful not to promise that he'd start. A week out from the Community Shield, 45 minutes would be the safe option.

Julian Alvarez could start up top after impressing against Club America, while Jack Grealish deserves to keep his place. Joao Cancelo will start, but with City's pursuit of a new left-back taking its time it would be surprising if Guardiola doesn't hand some more minutes to Josh Wilson-Esbrand. The same goes for right-back Rico Lewis.

Ruben Dias is back from illness so could play some part, as City's starting centre-back partnership against Liverpool next weekend could well be Dias and Nathan Ake.

Alex's XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias, Ake, Cancelo; Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo; Palmer, Alvarez, Grealish.

All eyes were on Haaland even before his absence from the US tour opener as an injury precaution. Naturally, the Norway goal machine is the one City supporters want to see and there will be plenty of time for that throughout the Premier League season.

Perhaps a start here would be premature, though, even against opponents he knows well. It might be a good idea to welcome Kalvin Phillips into the line-up - replacing Rodri - to catch an early glimpse of how he fares alongside a more seasoned bunch.

Guardiola can basically flip a coin over his goalkeeper at this stage, too, because he knows Ederson will be picked between the posts on the opening day of the Premier League campaign. So, perhaps, Ortega should be offered up another opportunity initially here.

Liam's XI: Ortega; Walker, Dias, Ake, Laporte; Bernardo, Phillips, De Bruyne; Mahrez, Alvarez, Grealish.
