Delays at Dublin Airport have been causing havoc for passengers headed abroad over recent weeks amid staff shortages.
This morning was no different as disgruntled travellers took to social media with images and complaints about their long wait to get through check-in and security.
On Sunday night, a spokesperson for the DAA released a statement saying the recommended time for arrival before a flight hasn’t changed, but passengers online are saying otherwise.
Officials cited issues with hiring and training staff after the collapse of the travel industry amid Covid and said: “Training and background security checks for all staff working at an international airport takes a number of weeks.”
They have estimated the lengthy wait times to continue over the course of a number of weeks with the growing volume of passengers coming through on a daily basis.
A spokesperson told the Irish Mirror today: “Security times fluctuate throughout the day so we cannot provide an estimated time that it may take to get through security.
“Our message to passengers remains the same, to arrive two hours before boarding on short-haul flights and three hours before boarding on long-haul flights.”
However, passengers going through the airport are detailing their waits, which seem to range from 40-minute queues to 3 hour waits at security.
A common theme among the accounts online is to arrive three hours before any flight if it is at a busy time for travel - morning peak hours are 6 am to 8 am.
One passenger took to Twitter and said: “Left on Friday last went for the fast track and it still took about 40 to get through security.
“I was there 3 hours ahead and had plenty of time but it looks to be worse since a friend missed a flight Sunday and was there 2 hours ahead.”
Another passenger wrote a colourful message online in a rage after waiting three hours in a queue to make their way past security - nearly missing their boarding call.
Meanwhile, a third person said: “There's no chance in hell I'm risking two hours after that hellscape you inflicted on people over the weekend.”
A final complaint among hundreds today said: “Security is taking over 3 hours to get through, but your luggage drop-off opens just 2.5hrs before take-off…”
So if you’re headed to the airport at peak times over the coming weeks, best to give yourself enough time to endure a long wait and still make your boarding time.
