How Is Aon's Stock Performance Compared to Other Insurance Stocks?

Aon plc (AON), headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, is a global professional services firm providing a broad spectrum of risk, retirement, and health solutions with a market cap of $75.72 billion. Competing with other major firms like Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. (MMC), Aon focuses on data-driven insights, client-centric strategies, and a commitment to delivering exceptional advisory and brokerage services.

Companies valued at $10 billion or more are classified as "large-cap" stocks, and Aon plc is a prime example of this, underscoring its considerable scale, stability, and influence within the global professional services sector. As a leading provider of risk, retirement, and health solutions, Aon's size reflects its extensive global presence, strong market position, and commitment to delivering value-driven services to its diverse client base.

AON shares are trading 1.2% below their 52-week high of $352.49, which they hit on Sep. 10. However, the stock has gained 18.1% over the past three months, outperforming the SPDR S&P Insurance ETF’s (KIE) 11.5% gain over the same time frame.

In the longer term, AON is up 19.7% on a YTD basis, and the shares have gained 4% over the past 52 weeks. The KIE has gained 22.3% in 2024 and 28.2% over the past year.

To confirm the bullish price action, AON has been trading above its 50-day moving average since late June and its 200-day moving average since late July.

On Jul. 26, Aon released its Q2 earnings report, leading to an 8% gain in its stock. The company exceeded analysts' revenue estimates but fell short on earnings, missing market expectations by 5.2%.

Highlighting the contrast in performance, rival MMC has outperformed AON, with a 21.4% gain on a YTD basis.

Despite AON's recent outperformance compared to its sector, analysts are cautious about its prospects. The stock has a consensus rating of "Hold" from 21 analysts in coverage. The mean price target is $344.31, which indicates that the stock trades at a premium.
