How Graham Potter will react differently to Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea boss after Brighton defeat

Following disappointing defeats for his Chelsea side, Thomas Tuchel would often call his players in for a team meeting the next morning to reflect the game, but new Chelsea manager Graham Potter has a different philosophy when it comes to dealing with painful losses.

Since his arrival as Blues boss, Potter has overseen nine games with his side remaining unbeaten after six wins and three losses but that streak ended on Saturday as Potter returned to his old club Brighton but left feeling rather embarrassed after his Chelsea were comfortably beaten 4-1 by the Seagulls.

Potter has received significant criticism for how he has setup his team with confusion surrounding where Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Christian Pulisic have all been deployed and the unnecessary rotation in certain areas of the pitch likely making it extremely difficultly for Chelsea to build up familiar partnerships in the mould of Potter's style of play.

Following the defeat to Brighton, Potter was asked about how he would proceed in the coming days, choosing to opt for a different method to what was used by Tuchel, who would often bring players in despite a planned day off.

He said: "I think it’s a case of analysing the game, being calm, being fair. It’s not necessarily about the players, it’s about all of us including myself, how we can improve, what we can do better.

"It’s not a disgrace to lose here. You could see the opponent was very motivated and they have some really good players. We got off to a bad start and it was not a pleasant afternoon for us. But you have to have that sometimes if you want to make progress. If you think the line is going to go straight up, it’s impossible.

"That team you see out there for Brighton wasn’t the team that was there three years ago. There is a process of pain you have to go through and you have to keep trying to improve."

The Chelsea boss went on to talk about how there will be more pain in store for Chelsea as they continue to learn the philosophy of the new man at the helm.

"Unless there is another way I don’t know another way (other than pain)," he said. "Whatever you learn, whenever you’re trying to master something or trying to get better at it, you need to sometimes have a bit of step back, you need to suffer or go through a bad experience to then grow and be better. That’s how I see it anyway."

Attention quickly turns to Chelsea's next game this coming Wednesday in the Champions League against Dinamo Zagreb, but with qualification and top spot in the group secured, Potter can tinker with his squad before they welcome Arsenal to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
