Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series: Notable upgrades that make a difference
Foldables are no longer the niche products they were just a few years ago, so competition in this segment has been fiercer than ever. After Motorola unveiled the Razr Fold earlier this year, Samsung has now taken the stage in London to unveil its latest line-up of foldables.
For the very first time, Samsung has launched not just one, but two powerhouse book-style foldables. These include the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. While the former comes with a wide and short chassis that makes it feel like a passport when held in the hand (similar to the first-generation Google Pixel Fold), the latter carries forward the form factor of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which it succeeds as the new flagship in Samsung's foldable portfolio.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is largely identical to its predecessor, at least in terms of design. However, when compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7, the new foldable packs in a handful of welcome improvements on the inside, notably in the battery and charging department.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, which is the largest powerpack that Samsung has ever stuffed in a foldable phone. Not only that, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 also packs a 4,800mAh battery, which is pretty darn impressive, given its compact physical footprint. This has been made possible because Samsung has finally jumped on the Silicon-Carbon bandwagon after dragging its feet for years. Sure, these battery capacities are not all that impressive by 2026 standards, they are still substantial upgrades over what we got with the previous-gen foldables.
Oh, and there's more good news! Both of these new foldables now support faster 45W wired charging. Again, it's nothing groundbreaking (even compared to the 60W wired charging speed of the Galaxy S26 Ultra), but it's still an upgrade over the measly 25W wired charging of the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Even the wireless charging speeds have been increased to 20W, although there are still no built-in magnets for native Qi2 support; instead, you'll have to buy a magnetic case for that.
We're glad that Samsung has introduced some key enhancements in the battery and charging department, even if they are rather modest when compared to the speedy 80W wired and 50W wireless charging (along with the 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery) of the Motorola Razr Fold. The Razr Fold also offers stylus support, which is still nowhere to be found on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.
Even so, we have no doubt that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra will earn their place among some of the best foldable phones on the market right now. That being said, we'll only be able to comment about real-world performance of these flagships after we've put them through their paces.
