How expensive your Christmas food shop will likely be this year

  • Supermarket food inflation is expected to reach nearly 4 per cent by Christmas before peaking at 6.4 per cent in July next year, according to the Food and Drink Federation .
  • Industry leaders warned that extreme weather, global conflicts, and surging energy prices are continuing to drive up food manufacturing and supply costs.
  • An average £100 grocery shop in January 2020 currently costs £138.60 and is projected to rise by a further £8.90 by July next year.
  • The Food and Drink Federation has urged the government to ease energy and regulatory burdens on manufacturers to help protect households from sustained price rises.
  • Defra stated that food security is a national security priority and highlighted government measures, such as suspending import tariffs, to help keep consumer prices down.
