How ex-Chelsea and Man United star helped Liverpool beat Tottenham to £50m Luis Diaz transfer

Liverpool have now officially confirmed the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto, in a deal that is worth a reported £37.5million, with a further £12.5million in potential bonuses.

The Colombia winger has penned a contract that will last until summer 2027.

Initially, it seemed Spurs looked the most likely destination for Diaz, but once Liverpool signalled their intent, it made it increasingly difficult for the north Londoners to persuade him into joining the club.

It's also been revealed now that a big part of him being convinced to join Jurgen Klopp's was down to the advice of former players at Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United.

According to the Mirror, former Chelsea and Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao and ex Everton winger James Rodriguez both urged Diaz to join Liverpool ahead of Spurs.

It's certainly interesting as when comparing both Premier League clubs, the common opinion is that Diaz would receive more minutes under Antonio Conte as opposed to Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool manager already has the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino to choose from, so Diaz most definitely has plenty of competition ahead of him.

Under Antonio Conte however, the spread of quality in the forward line isn't as strong, so the chances of the 25-year-old receiving plenty of first-team minutes would have been fairly high.

But perhaps the opportunity to sign for a team that is currently competing for the Premier League along with learning under a world-class manager was just too much of an attractive offer to turn down.

Diaz will hope to be included in Liverpool's next fixture which is an FA Cup tie against Cardiff City at Anfield.
