Harry Kane could be the victim of a revolution in boot deals.
But Erling Haaland will be able to name his price as all the boot manufacturers scrap it out for his signature. England captain Kane’s current deal with Nike is coming towards the end and the big boot companies are moving in a different direction with their lucrative deals.
The likes of Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Phil Foden will always command huge offers but it may never be so good again for older members of the England squad who perhaps lack the X Factor and star quality.
Back in the day, boot companies would snap up promising kids - as young as ten or 12 - on deals worth £5,000-a-year and as many boots as they wanted. One England regular’s last deal was worth £9m-a-year.
Former Tottenham star Dele Alli could even command more with his boot deal and his off-the-field activities than his highly lucrative playing contract.
But now a combination of Covid and recession cutbacks has seen boot companies be much more targeted with their deals. That is why they will always remain keen on the superstars and Kane will certainly get a deal even if it might not be as big as in the past.
However, one marketing expert believes around half the Premier League ’s players could be without boot deals, let alone lower down the divisions. That, in the past, would have been unthinkable.
