A series of savvy real estate investments that began three decades ago is continuing to pay off in a big way for former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns.
The musician has banked a six-figure profit after selling an investment property in Sydney's inner east.
The top-floor, two-bedroom apartment in Darlinghurst sold on August 6 after spending four weeks on the market.
Johns originally purchased the art deco property in 2010 for $670,000 alongside his brother, BMG Music president Heath Johns.
While the final sale price remains undisclosed, the property initially launched with a guide of $1.3 million before a slight adjustment revised the asking price to $1.2 million.
The Sydney sale is the latest move in a sell-off that began two years ago, centred around properties held in the beachside suburb of Merewether.
In August last year, Johns listed a vacant lot on the site of his former home on Charlotte Street in Merewether, which he demolished 25 years after purchasing the property for $1.4 million.
It originally comprised a 1970s five-bedroom residence across two titles spanning 1942 square metres.
The block, located at 1/8 Charlotte Street, sold for $3.2 million.
Johns initially planned to retain the neighbouring land and build a new home.
But after a change of heart, Johns put the property on the market in May, chasing $2.75 million to $3 million for the site.
The 968-square-metre block at 8a Charlotte Street is listed with Salt Property agent Lyndall Allan.
Johns' first big sale emerged in August 2024 when he walked away with a massive windfall after selling a long-time investment property in Merewether for $2.75 million.
The sale of the four-bedroom house on Ranclaud Street delivered a profit of $2.39 million.
Johns, 47, had just turned 17 when he paid $360,000 to secure the beachside home in 1996 after the success of Silverchair's 1995 debut album, Frogstomp.
At the time, Silverchair had just signed a worldwide three-album recording contract.
The group's estimated gross earnings in 1995 were $6.4 million, according to an article published in the Australian Financial Review in April 1996.
Johns retains ownership of a two-bedroom house on Robinson Street, Merewether, overlooking the beach.
According to Cotality records, he purchased the 1950s shack 30 years ago for $645,000.
After a bold makeover, the property began operating as a short-term holiday rental on Airbnb, Merewether Beach Shack, last year.
A nightly stay costs about $550.
During his career with Silverchair, Johns, alongside band mates Chris Joannou and Ben Gillies, released five number-one albums.
Since the band announced "an indefinite hibernation" in 2011, Johns has released two solo albums including 2022's FutureNever.
