Someone checking the price of XRP today is approaching it through its market value. Cross-border payments raise a different question about currency that includes what happens when the sender has one form of value and the recipient needs another. A family member supporting relatives abroad or a freelancer working for an overseas client may care far more about what arrives at the destination than which asset began the transaction.
Payment infrastructure can treat those two ends separately. The sender supplies one asset, available liquidity provides a route between currencies, and the recipient receives the requested asset when the transaction conditions can be satisfied. The XRP Ledger offers a useful technical example of how that arrangement can work.
