How Chelsea have fared vs Sean Dyche's Burnley over 10 years amid sack decision

Chelsea and Sean Dyche's Burnley have a mixed relationship when it comes to results as the Blues will likely never have to face his stern Clarets side again as the Lancashire outfit make the ruthless decision to sack him.

Burnley are a footballing side known to most clubs as simply Sean Dyche's club. That itself just shows how much his philosophy has transmitted across the Premier League during his stunted spells. Obviously, the Clarets have been promoted twice and relegated since Dyche took over nearly in 2012 but nevertheless, during his time, his side have faced the current world and European champions on 14 different occasions- all coming in the Premier League.

But it's 14 and out for Dyche vs Chelsea as he was ruthlessly dismissed by Alan Pace with the Burnley board making the emotional decision to go another route as they look for an emergency revival to their top flight campaign with relegation looming. Pace said via Lancashire Live: "Firstly, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sean and his staff for their achievements at the Club over the last decade.

"During his time at Turf Moor, Sean has been a credit both on and off the pitch, respected by players, staff, supporters, and the wider football community. However, results this season have been disappointing and, while this was an incredibly difficult decision, with eight crucial games of the campaign remaining, we feel a change is needed to give the squad the best possible chance of retaining its Premier League status.

"Under-23s coach Mike Jackson, assisted by Academy Director Paul Jenkins, Under-23s goalkeeping coach Connor King and club captain Ben Mee have been asked to take charge of the team for Sunday’s game with West Ham United. The process of replacing Sean has begun and further announcements will be made to supporters in due course."

As Burnley seek out their replacement ahead of their eight remaining fixtures this term in the Premier League, football.london has decided to take a look at all the results between the current 18th placed side and Chelsea during Dyche's 10 year tenure at Turf Moor.

1. 2014- Burnley 1-3 Chelsea

This was the game whereby Chelsea announced their title intentions early on in Jose Mourinho's second stint in charge of the west Londoners. Scott Arfield had given Dyche's side the lead in this one initially after slamming an effort past Thibaut Courtois but after Branislav Ivanovic equalised from a corner kick, there was no stopping the Blues on this occasion.

Cesc Fabregas' beautiful pass to set up Andre Schurrle's goal will be remembered most from this one, but it was also notable for Diego Costa's first goal for the club which started his fiery streak in front of goal in 2014/25.

2. 2015- Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Jose Mourinho's epic rant against Martin Atkinson will be the most memorable part when reminiscing on what happened during this 1-1 draw. Chelsea had taken the lead through Ivanovic in the first half but the Serbian and looked to be cruising to a tight win which would have sped up their Premier League coronation.

However, a Nemanja Matic red card in correlation with Ben Mee scoring late on caused the now-Roma boss to meltdown due to the decisions made during the 90 minutes by referee Atkinson.

3. 2016- Chelsea 3-0 Burnley

With the Clarets back in the Premier League this season after being relegated in 2014/15 coupled with Antonio Conte's entrance to the top flight, this meeting between the two in late August of 2016/16 provided a great watch from the Blues' perspective. It was the Eden Hazard show on this occasion but he wasn't the only one to net in this contest as Willian and Victor Moses also found the back of the net.

4. 2017- Burnley 1-1 Chelsea

This game was one of the minor blips Chelsea had in their title winning season under the now-Spurs boss. An early Pedro goal wasn't built upon from the west Londoners' perspective as a Robbie Brady free-kick earnt his side a vital point in their survival quest in 2016/17.

5. 2017- Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

An opening day defeat to Dyche and co signalled the difficult season that was to follow for the Blues. After winning the title, the expectation was that the Blues would come out firing on all cylinders but after a poor summer transfer window, Conte's frustrations off the pitch seemed to filter through to his side who looked disorganised and all over the place on this occasion.

Sam Vokes' two goals coupled with a great strike from Stephen Ward was enough to prevent Alvaro Morata and David Luiz rescuing a point for Chelsea on this occasion.

6. 2018- Burnley 1-2 Chelsea

At the time, this specific win handed Conte's way by Victor Moses' winner had the Blues in a strong position in the top four race as they were sat in third at this point in time. However, as we all know, the FA Cup winners from this season spiralled out of control and ended the campaign fifth.

7. 2018- Burnley 0-4 Chelsea

Out of the 14 times these two sides have gone up against each other with Dyche at the helm, Chelsea have come out 4-0 winners on two occasions with this one being the first. Goals on this occasion from Morata, Ross Barkley, Willian and Ruben Loftus-Cheek kept Maurizio Sarri's strong start to life in England going..

8. 2019- Chelsea 2-2 Burnley

This draw in SW6 was one that threatened to put a major spanner in the works for the Blues' top four quest under the now-Lazio manager. Jeff Hendrick and ex-Chelsea target Ashley Barnes were on the scoresheet during this Monday Night Football as both N'Golo Kante and Gonzalo Higuain were the two goalscorers for the home side.

9. 2019- Burnley 2-4 Chelsea

This was the game whereby Christian Pulisic announced himself to the Premier League with his perfect hat-trick. It was a result amongst others that eventually ensured Frank Lampard's side achieved a top four finish despite working under a transfer ban in the summer prior to the 2019/20 season kicking off.

10. 2020- Chelsea 3-0 Chelsea

Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Tammy Abraham were all on the scoresheet as Lampard maintained his 100% record in his first season against Dyche. However, he has now lost that personal record after Burnley defeated his Everton side 3-2 in the relegation race recently this term.

11. 2020- Burnley 0-3 Chelsea

One of the few positive results Lampard achieved in 2020/21 as he was eventually dismissed in the new year despite this win. Goals on this occasion from Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner meant that the club legend was spared an earlier exit under Roman Abramovich.

12. 2021- Chelsea 2-0 Burnley

This game was one of Thomas Tuchel's first games in charge of a shaken Blues side who had lost their way and mojo under Lampard. A 0-0 draw vs Wolves was followed up by a 2-0 win against the Clarets as two full-backs were the matchwinners on this occasion. Cesar Azpilicueta scored the first goal of the Tuchel era with Marcos Alonso adding the gloss on the result late on.

13. 2021- Chelsea 1-1 Burnley

Matej Vydra's late equaliser in this one earlier this season culminated in Tuchel's side slipping away from the current title race. Kai Havertz had given Chelsea the lead but a mix of terrible finishing coupled with other factors led the German manager to admitting that Dyche's side were 'very lucky' on this occasion to snatch a point from the jaws of death in this one.

"Very lucky but that's football. Were we lucky in the first of these seven matches to escape with a clean sheet against Brentford? Yes, we were. So, of course, they were lucky but that's why everyone loves the game because it's possible to win matches like this," he said in his post-match press conference at the time. "I stick with my feelings from the sidelines, I have proof from the data we have now that we had a fantastic match. I liked the attitude, I liked the intensity and the concentration levels."

14. 2022- Burnley 0-4 Chelsea

The final game between the pair of current Premier League teams was another 4-0 success on the road at Turf Moor. Chelsea and Turf Moor usually go very well together as seen with the results above and this game, despite being overshadowed with the Roman Abramovich news and what supporters choose to do at this game.

Overall...

Out of the 14 aforementioned games, Chelsea have a win record against Dyche of 64% whilst drawing 29% of the fixtures and losing only 7% of the 14. This all means the Blues faithful will only have mostly good memories of facing the current relegation threatened club.
