Free agent Cam Newton put his ability on show during Auburn's Pro Day on Tuesday, after bragging about what he can still offer in the NFL.
The 33-year-old sat out of the 2022 season after leaving the Carolina Panthers in 2021, but is targeting a swift return to NFL action. Newton made over 30 passes to younger brother Caylin and NFL hopeful Shedrick Jackson after being invited back to Auburn, with scouts looking on.
The former No.1 overall pick certainly looked comfortable back out on the field, but despite doing a lot of talking before the event, he didn't speak to any reporters after his Pro Day appearance. However, his brother took on the responsibility for him as he sent a plea to any interested teams.
"This was him showing love to me," Caylin Newton said of his older brother. "He doesn’t owe anybody anything. He has had an amazing journey, an amazing career in the NFL.
"He has nothing to prove to anybody. He came to show his ability, show he still has it. I think, for him, this was a selfless act. But it was also to show and prove to everybody he’s not sitting around. He’s still got it. Whatever organisation wants to get a winning quarterback, his number’s still open and available."
Jackson was also complimentary of Newton, following the practice on Tuesday. "That was fun," Jackson said. "That was probably my most favourite part, just learning his lingo, seeing his cadence. He’s got good touch on the ball. I think he’s still got it."
It was a feel-good event on Tuesday, with the Newton brothers linking up, while Auburn invited their former star back to give him another push in the right direction.
Newton won a Heisman Trophy and a national championship while at Auburn, which helped make him the no.1 overall draft pick back in 2011. Newton was named NFL MVP back in 2015, and was also named offensive player of the year that same season.
But after an initial rise, things began to slow down for Newton, and his last season in 2021 ended with an unwanted 0-5 record. However, Newton is keen to bounce back after he announced his intentions in a video posted to social media.
"I've seen a lot of people toying the idea and it's official: I will be throwing at Auburn's pro day Tuesday," Newton said in the video clip. "Ain't 32 motherf****** better than me, you dig?"
