How Arsenal could call upon previous Mesut Ozil experience to beat Liverpool to £50m transfer

Arsenal could potentially call upon their excellent recent relations with Spanish giants Real Madrid in an effort to secure the services of long-term transfer target Marco Asensio.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the Spanish winger on numerous occasions in the past and those rumours have once again been stirred over recent weeks.

As per Spanish outlet SPORT, Arsenal are once again contenders for his services with Real Madrid potentially being open to a sale.

Asensio has just 18 months remaining on his current contract at the Santiago Bernabeu and a price of €60m (£50m) could be enough to secure a deal.

Edu and Mikel Arteta face considerable competition should they wish to move for the forward’s services though, with Premier League rivals Liverpool credited as potential suitors, whilst the likes of Juventus, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain are all mentioned in association with a potential move.

Should all of those aforementioned clubs throw their hats in the ring for Asensio, then it might well make a switch to the Emirates Stadium slightly more difficult.

However, the Gunners have a secret weapon ahead of engaging in talks with Real Madrid and that is the fact that they have managed to build-up a rapport with the Spanish giants over recent seasons.

Since 2013, Arsenal have welcomed three new faces from the Bernabeu to north London - beginning with the big-money acquisition of German playmaker Mesut Ozil.

That continued ahead of the 2019 season with the addition of Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos - the Gunners eventually managing to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium for a further season.

Whilst Ceballos’ signing wasn’t anywhere near as successful as Ozil’s, one deal that looks certainly promising is that of Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian star was initially signed on-loan for the second-half of the 2020/21 deal.

Talks over a permanent deal were relatively smooth until Odegaard eventually penned a five-year deal at the Emirates Stadium for a fee of a reported £30m.

It remains to be seen whether the Gunners will be successful in their attempts of signing another Real Madrid star but they will certainly be hoping that they have set the tone in their discussions with the Spanish giants in the past.
