How Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham can sign players after 11pm transfer deadline

It's certainly been a hectic last few days of the January transfer window - with plenty of moves still set to go through tonight.

Arsenal are expected to announce the £12million arrival of Jorginho, while Chelsea continue to work on a British record deal for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Tottenham have also been active, bringing in Spanish full-back Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon.

The winter window is usually quiet for most clubs, but this one has been one of the busiest yet and teams are always willing to throw money around at the last minute to strengthen their chances of finishing the season strongly.

However, the window will shut at 11pm this evening, meaning teams can no longer do business until the summer window opens again in July, that's unless your club is planning to submit a deal sheet.

As long as a deal sheet is sent to the relevant governing bodies before 11pm, transfers can still go through after the cut-off. If the deal sheets are submitted within two hours of the deadline, it allows a player to move from one team to another after the window slams shut.

The deal sheet then allows clubs to prove that a proposal has been agreed between both clubs, granting them extra time to get it done - but this can only be submitted between 9-11pm. Should a deal sheet be submitted in this two-hour period, all the documentation must be fully completed in order for it to be allowed.

This is usually why many deals are confirmed up until 1am following deadline day, as clubs are granted an extra two hours to get everything finalised. Another way clubs can sign players after the deadline is by dipping into the free-agent market. Those currently without a club are available to sign for a team regardless of the transfer window being shut.

For example, former Real Madrid midfielder Isco is a free agent after his contract with Sevilla was cut short in December. The 30-year-old was expected to join Bundesliga side Union Berlin today and even had a medical scheduled, but a last-minute disagreement over money has seen the move collapse. So, barring a dramatic late turn of events, Isco will still find himself as a free agent and available to join another club beyond the deadline.
