How a sailor’s workout gave away French nuclear warship’s location

  • A French sailor inadvertently revealed the precise location and direction of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier by publicly uploading his 4.3-mile jog on the fitness app Strava.
  • The incident took place while the nuclear-powered carrier was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, a deployment ordered by French President Emmanuel Macron on 3 March amid the US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
  • Le Monde newspaper confirmed the leak by cross-referencing the sailor's public workout data with satellite imagery, which showed the carrier northwest of Cyprus shortly after the 35-minute run.
  • The French Armed Forces General Staff stated that the upload violated current digital security directives and confirmed that disciplinary measures would be taken by the command.
  • This event underscores previous warnings from Le Monde about Strava's security vulnerabilities, which had previously been used to expose sensitive information, including patrol schedules of French nuclear submarines and details about world leaders' bodyguards.
