How a fruit born out of 1992 experiment is helping farmers earn Rs 10–12 lakh per acre

On winter mornings in western Maharashtra, strawberry fields come alive under a blanket of mist. Bright red berries peek out from neat rows of green plants, creating one of the most recognisable sights in the region. Today, Mahabaleshwar strawberries are known across India. They appear in fruit bowls, desserts, milkshakes and breakfast plates. But behind every berry is a story of innovation, farming expertise and thousands of families who have helped turn a seasonal fruit into a thriving industry.

From the hills of Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar to flats in Mumbai, Pune and Thane, strawberries have become one of Maharashtra's most loved fruits.

Mahabaleshwar Strawberry Farming: Why the Region Is Perfect for Cultivation

Mahabaleshwar's climate plays a major role in producing quality strawberries. The region enjoys cool temperatures, dry air and moderate sunshine during the growing season. Farmers say these conditions help berries develop their sweetness and flavour naturally.

The area's red, iron-rich soil also supports healthy plant growth. Combined with careful farming practices and crop rotation, it helps maintain the quality for which Mahabaleshwar strawberries are famous.

Most strawberry farms in the region are relatively small, but generations of experience have helped farmers maximise both yield and quality.

What Makes a Strawberry Plant Unique?

Strawberries belong to the Fragaria genus and are part of the rose family. The plants grow close to the ground and produce clusters of green leaves with serrated edges. Small white flowers appear before the fruit develops.

As the season progresses, berries begin to form. Depending on the variety, strawberries can range from deep red to light pink and even white.

Their sweet-tart flavour and short shelf life make them a highly sought-after seasonal fruit.
