Father’s Day weekend turned tragic in a Houston neighborhood after a domestic dispute between a man and his spouse, identified as Martha Alicia Oliva Padilla, evolved into a homicide investigation with some of the most disturbing details imaginable. While Luis Adrian Zepeda Lopez was still making mechanical repairs beneath his vehicle, Padilla allegedly got into the car with their two minor children and drove away, dragging him underneath the vehicle until he died.
There are still no definitive details about what sparked the domestic dispute. However, Houston Police Department Captain Ryan Watson was able to outline nearly everything else investigators believe happened leading up to Lopez’s death.
The investigation involves three different crime scenes
According to Guessing Headlights, the incident began on Sheraton Oaks, while the victim’s body was ultimately found on Antoine Drive. The black Honda SUV allegedly involved in the incident was later abandoned at a nearby apartment complex.
Authorities say Padilla entered the driver’s seat while her spouse was still underneath the vehicle working on it and drove away with the couple’s two children inside. Investigators believe she traveled roughly two city blocks before Lopez died. His body was later discovered on the roadway.
Police were eventually able to locate Padilla by working with the apartment complex and nearby businesses to track her movements. Reportedly, that process was not easy. Investigators had to search nearly five miles away from the apartment complex before ultimately finding her.
Padilla is now facing serious charges
Court documents show that prosecutors are charging Padilla with murder and failure to stop and render aid in connection with Lopez’s death. Antoine Drive remained closed for several hours while detectives gathered evidence for the Harris County District Attorney’s vehicular crimes unit as prosecutors worked to build their case.
A neighbor familiar with the family, Desiree Forman-Bland, described the crime as “heartbreaking.” Members of the neighborhood noted that Lopez had simply been spending Father’s Day weekend working on his vehicle when tragedy struck.
Padilla remains in the Harris County Jail on a $275,000 bond. According to Click2Houston, prosecutors have argued that she presents a serious flight risk because she is also subject to a federal immigration deportation order.

The arraignment process
From this point forward, the case will largely rest in the hands of prosecutors and Padilla’s defense attorneys. If convicted, Padilla could face life in prison. Even if she were to prevail in the criminal case on grounds such as mental health issues or another legal defense, her immigration status could still expose her to deportation proceedings once the case concludes.
In Houston, felony cases often take months to progress from initial hearings to a grand jury indictment. As a result, there could be a substantial wait before the public sees a verdict, especially since prosecutors must prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt. That timeline could change if Padilla chooses to enter a guilty plea.
