In a recent media address, Houston Rockets general manager Rafael Stone shed light on the team's lack of activity during the trade deadline. Despite rumors swirling about the Rockets' interest in acquiring immediate help, particularly at the backup center position, the team's only move was securing Steven Adams as a backup center for next season.
Stone revealed that discussions had taken place regarding other potential deals, but none materialized in the end. He expressed a preference for moves that could benefit the team in both the short and long term. One player frequently linked to the Rockets was Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets, a 27-year-old swingman who could have provided an instant boost to the team while aligning with their young core.
Stone acknowledged that teams inquired about the availability of the Rockets' 'Core 6'—Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, Amen Thompson, and Cam Whitmore. However, both Stone and head coach Ime Udoka agreed that the young prospects needed more than just 50 games before any conclusions could be drawn about their potential.
Regarding Jalen Green, the team's starting shooting guard and second overall pick in the 2021 draft, Stone described him as a great fit for the team on paper. Green is aware of areas where he needs improvement, particularly physicality and efficiency. As Green's shooting struggles persist in his third season, he becomes eligible for a contract extension this summer.
Stone also highlighted the addition of Steven Adams, referring to him as a dominant rebounder and one of the best defenders in the NBA. Adams brings valuable depth to the center position, with Alperen Sengun already holding down the starting spot. Adams' experience as a former starter allows Udoka the luxury of changing the pace of the game when needed or when Sengun struggles defensively. Prior to acquiring Adams, the Rockets had relied on veteran forward Jeff Green to fill the backup center role.
Stone's remarks indicate that the Rockets are focused on internal improvements and continue to evaluate their core prospects. Although their chances of making the play-in tournament this season are diminishing due to injuries to key players, the goal remains to take the next step forward in the coming season. The Rockets are determined to build a foundation for success and develop their young talent for the future.
