Houston Outages Expected To Be Resolved Within Two Days

Following the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, CenterPoint Energy, Houston's main utility company, has assured residents that the majority of outages should be resolved within the next two days. However, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed dissatisfaction with CenterPoint's response and threatened consequences even after power is restored.

The Texas Public Utility Commission has initiated an investigation into CenterPoint's storm preparation and handling of the outages, as demanded by Governor Abbott. The utility has been given until the end of July to submit plans for safeguarding the power supply and enhancing infrastructure resilience in anticipation of the ongoing hurricane season.

While CenterPoint has defended its efforts in restoring power, critics question the effectiveness of state regulators in holding utilities accountable and ensuring grid resilience in Texas, a state known for its energy production.

The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl has once again raised concerns about the reliability of Texas' power grid, following the catastrophic winter storm in 2021 that left millions without power. Unlike the winter storm, which was primarily due to power generation failures, Beryl's impact was characterized by downed power lines and outages affecting approximately 2.7 million homes and businesses, with over 200,000 still without power in the Houston area.
