A Houston man accused of strangling his pregnant wife and then lying to emergency responders about her cause of death is out on a $1 million bond just one week after the incident.

Lee Mongerson Gilley, 38, called 911 on Monday, Oct. 7. He claimed that his wife, Christa Gilley, 38, had committed suicide by drug overdose. However, hospital staff identified inconsistencies in Lee's claims, and an autopsy later revealed Christa was likely strangled. Lee was charged with capital murder shortly after.

Christa's family shared the following statement with KPRC 2 through their attorney:

"Christa's family remains focused on remembering Christa as a kind, welcoming, and selfless mother, friend, and daughter. We are deeply disappointed that the defendant made bond just a week after Christa's death, but we are focused on the safety and well-being of Christa's children. Christa's family and loved ones want what is best for her children and support law enforcement's efforts to bring justice for Christa and her unborn child."

According to a KHOU report, authorities indicated that Lee and Christa were at their home on Oct. 7 with their two young children, whom Lee is not allowed to see while out on bond.

Both children are currently with Christa's family members, as confirmed by a family acquaintance.

Lee is being represented by defense attorney Ed McClees, who said Lee was "devastated over the loss of his wife" following the bond hearing, according to KPRC 2. "There's more that's unknown than known right now," McClees said.

Harris County Assistant District Attorney Lindsey Bondurant also told KPRC 2 that Lee made concerning statements the night of the homicide, saying "bad things happen to good people" and that he was "being set up."
