House Speaker Mike Johnson Praises Passage Of Stopgap Spending Bill

U.S. House of Representatives elect Mike Johnson Speaker of the House at the U.S. Capitol in Washington

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed optimism for the future as Republicans prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress in January. The passage of a stopgap spending bill on Friday marked a significant step in government funding.

The bill approved by the House will extend funding until March and includes provisions for disaster relief and farming. It now awaits consideration in the Senate.

Johnson emphasized the importance of the legislation, describing it as a necessary measure to pave the way for final decisions on spending in 2025. He highlighted the upcoming transition in leadership, stating, 'We are set up for a big and important new start in January.'

Following President-elect Donald Trump's request to include a suspension of the debt limit in the bill, a new agreement had to be reached. While the bill passed by the House does not address the debt limit, Johnson commended the unity displayed in making the decision.

'We're grateful that everyone stood together to do the right thing,' Johnson remarked, urging swift approval of the bill in the Senate to ensure continued government operations.
