House Speaker Mike Johnson has revealed the next steps to prevent a government shutdown in a letter addressed to his members. The plan, referred to as a limited continuing resolution, aims to fund the government until December 20 and includes a provision for $230 million in Secret Service funding.
Johnson emphasized the importance of passing a clean, three-month CR in order to avoid potential complications from the Senate introducing a bill with significant new spending and unrelated provisions. The proposed legislation is designed to be a narrow, bare-bones CR that focuses solely on essential extensions.
Earlier in the week, the House was unable to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan due to a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting. With government funding set to expire at the end of the month, Johnson expressed his desire to prevent a shutdown just weeks before the upcoming election.
Johnson highlighted the potential negative impact of a government shutdown so close to the election, describing it as an act of political malpractice. He reiterated his commitment to working tirelessly to strengthen the majority for the 119th Congress leading up to election day.
