House Republicans Consider Dropping Debt Limit Suspension To Avoid Shutdown

Scenes from the hill as the deadline to avoid a partial government shutdown looms in Washington, U.S.

House Republicans are currently in discussions to potentially drop the suspension of the national debt limit, despite pressure from former President Donald Trump, in order to prevent a government shutdown at the end of the month. This decision is being made to avoid any damaging consequences that may arise from a shutdown.

It remains uncertain what the final resolution will be, as well as whether the proposed plan will receive enough support in Congress, particularly from Democrats. The plan will require significant backing from Democrats to pass.

Sources from the Democratic party have indicated that they may feel compelled to support a clean extension of government funding, which aligns more closely with the original agreement before Trump intervened. However, they emphasize the need to review the final version of the plan and express frustration at being excluded from the decision-making process.

Following a meeting in House Speaker Mike Johnson's office, GOP Representative Bob Good of Virginia, along with Vice President-elect JD Vance and others, informed the media that various options are still being considered. Good expressed his belief that the debt ceiling issue will likely be removed from the discussion.

Good stated, 'The debt ceiling, I don’t think is going to be on the table for the vote that’s taken before the end of the year.' The meeting in Johnson's office is ongoing, with votes expected to take place later today.
