The House Oversight Committee Chairman, Rep. James Comer, announced the cancellation of a scheduled hearing that would have included testimony from D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. The hearing was intended to examine the D.C. municipal government's response to an anti-Israel encampment at George Washington University (GWU).

Chairman Comer stated that the hearing was called off following the action taken by the Metropolitan Police Department to clear the encampment from GWU's campus earlier that day. In a statement, Comer expressed his satisfaction with the police's intervention and the subsequent resolution of the situation.

Comer revealed that he had a productive conversation with Mayor Bowser in the morning, during which he thanked her for addressing the issue at GWU. He acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances that led to the Oversight Committee's involvement but emphasized the necessity of upholding the law.

After consulting with GWU leadership and inspecting the encampment, it was decided to convene a public hearing to seek clarification on why the Mayor's office had not taken action sooner. The decision to cancel the hearing was made in light of the successful clearance of the encampment by law enforcement.

The incident at GWU underscored the importance of effective coordination between local authorities and federal oversight bodies in addressing public safety concerns. While the hearing with Mayor Bowser has been called off, the Oversight Committee remains vigilant in its commitment to ensuring accountability and adherence to the law.
