House of the Dragon to edit out CGI gaffe from latest episode

House of the Dragon viewers spotted an embarrassing CGI gaffe in the latest episode of the Game of Thrones prequel, which bosses have now confirmed will be edited out.

Many eagle-eyed fans took to social media following Monday’s episode to point out something unusual in one particular scene. In it, Paddy Considine’s King Viserys is seen handing a scroll to another character, while viewers noticed two of his fingers looked unusually green.

Previously seen flash-forward scenes show the character missing the fingers in question, suggesting he will lose them later in the series. It appears the special effects team forgot to remove them from this shot in yet another CGI blunder for the epic franchise.

Swathes of viewers took to social media to poke fun at the error, as one said: "Someone’s gonna get in trouble. They forgot to CGI out Viserys fingers in episode 3. Hahaha."

Another said: "Not the green screen glove on Viserys’s missing fingers," followed by a laughing emoji.

A third added: "Game of Thrones had Little Finger. House of the Dragon has King "Green Screen" Fingers."

Quick to repair the damage, HBO Max has now confirmed to Variety the editing will be retrospectively repaired for future broadcasts. This is not the first time Game of Thrones has drawn unwanted attention for its editing blunders, as fans of the show will no doubt remember the infamous Starbucks fiasco from the original series.

In 2019, a scene featuring Emilia Clarke’s dragon queen Daenerys Targaryen went viral when it showed a Starbucks coffee cup had made its way onto set, subsequently going unnoticed by the show’s cast and crew. As with House of the Dragon’s green-fingered fail, the special effects team soon went back and removed the cup from the scene thanks to some computer-generated wizardry.

This is also not the first time House of the Dragon has come under fire for its use of special effects. Following the premiere of its first episode last month, many fans took to Twitter to complain about the show's "dodgy" CGI.
