House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock "bullied" herself into accepting the role of Supergirl after swearing off big franchises after the Game of Thrones spin-off

Supergirl star Milly Alcock says that she "bullied" herself into taking on the role of Kara Zor-El.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Alcock said, "I was so shit-scared that my life was over at 22" when she didn't work for a year after wrapping on Netflix's Sirens. "And, of course, it wasn’t." When the opportunity arose to play Supergirl, she revealed that she "kind of bullied myself into it," as her work on House of the Dragon had made her swear off big franchises.

As well as both being entries in massive franchises with dedicated fanbases, there's another similarity between House of the Dragon and the next DCU flick: after learning High Valyerian to play the younger version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon season 1, Alcock then had to get her head around Kryptonian to play Superman's cousin.

"There are five languages in this film, and Kryptonian is one of them, all original languages," director Craig Gillespie recently revealed. "So they had to learn a language. There's some major scenes, like minutes and minutes of dialogue that they've got to work with. You really need actors of that caliber."

The upcoming movie will see Supergirl go on a "murderous quest for revenge" across the galaxy, accompanied by Krypto the Superdog, where she'll butt heads with Matthias Schoenaerts' villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.

When asked about the dismissal of the superhero genre by industry giants like Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott, Alcock told the publication, "I get it. They’ve been around for fucking ever making phenomenal films. Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective."

Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the other upcoming DC movies and shows on the way as part of the DCU Chapter One and beyond.
